Pregnancy nausea is also known as pregnancy sickness or nausea gravidarum. This condition affects about half of women who are pregnant and some also experience vomiting or both. When does pregnancy nausea start? It usually begins at six weeks and for some as early as four weeks.  It has a tendency to worsen for succeeding months but for some women it only last for several months. Pregnancy nausea is a challenge for all pregnant women.  They feel tired even if just a mild case while others feel miserable and exhausted especially if felt all throughout the day.

What Causes Nausea during Pregnancy

The exact causes of nausea are unknown but some possible cause may involve the combination of several physical changes that is happening in the body.  Both human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG and the oestrogen plays a big role. The levels of these hormones are rapidly increasing during the first weeks of pregnancy that may cause pregnancy nausea.

The gastrointestinal tracts of some women are more sensitive to the pregnancy changes.  Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is another cause which is due to the draining energy of the placenta from the pregnant mother. According to researchers, some women are more susceptible to experience nausea and vomiting in pregnancy if they are suffering from stress.

Pregnancy Nausea Remedies

There is no known evidence that will validate the effectiveness of the remedies for pregnancy nausea. The purpose of the suggested remedies is to reduce the symptoms of nausea during pregnancy instead of dealing with the main cause.  Here are some of the remedies for nausea early pregnancy.

  • Eat foods that are high in carbohydrates such as crackers before getting up in the morning.  Give the foods some time to be absorbed by the body and increase the blood sugar. Move slowly because quick and rush movements tend to worsen nausea.
  • Drink enough fluids to keep the body hydrated all the time because dehydration is dangerous.  If enough fluid intakes are quite difficult, try eating vegetables and fruits that are high in water content.
  • Maintain the levels of your blood sugar by eating foods that are high in complex carbohydrates and proteins in small yet frequent meals.  Complex carbohydrates take a while before it transform to blood sugar and this will prevent dropping of sugar level.  Snacks that are consumed in small yet frequent tend to work well than large meals.

Pregnancy Nausea Relief

Some health care practitioners suggest taking down notes about pregnancy nausea during the day.  Record the meals and snacks, your feelings and activities to identify the patterns that can help in preventing nausea from occurring in the future. Here are some of the suggested relief for pregnancy nausea.

  • Smell the cut lemons to relieve your nausea or add it to iced tea or water.
  • Drink ginger tea because ginger settles the stomach.
  • Take pregnancy multivitamins or Vitamin B6 that may help in reducing pregnancy nausea.
  • If there is severe nausea during pregnancy, it is best to consult health professionals at once.
