For most women especially the first time moms, they consider the first trimester pregnancy as the most overwhelming period because all things are new and exciting. Week 1 up to week 12 is known as the first trimester pregnancy. This is the period when the fetus undergoes significant development that is why pregnancy care first trimester should be observed.

Nausea can be felt any time of the day especially after waking up and it is also known as morning sickness.  The breast also changes because the levels of progesterone and oestrogen are increasing. Breasts feel heavier, larger and sore to touch while nipples become darker. Micturition or urinary frequency is also experienced in first week of pregnancy due to the increasing levels of hormones and secretion of human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG. The increasing supply of the blood to the pelvic area causes irritation to the bladder.

First Trimester Pregnancy Screening

It is important that during the first trimester pregnancy, mothers should undergo screening to acquire initial information about the health of their babies. The usual screening is done between 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. Screening during first trimester pregnancy consists of 2 steps and these are blood test and ultrasound exam.  The blood exam is done to measure the protein levels found in the bloodstream of the mothers during pregnancy. These proteins can detect if there is any risk that foetus will have chromosome abnormalities. Another exam in first trimester pregnancy is the ultrasound which estimates the gestational age. During the procedure, the measurement of the nuchal found thickness or NT measurement is taken. If the NT measurement increased, there is 80% possibility that the baby will have chromosomal problems and other genetic disorders.

First Trimester Pregnancy Diet

There is no magic diet formula to have a healthy first trimester pregnancy since the basic principle is still the same which is to eat plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. However, there are some nutrients that needs special attention during first trimester pregnancy and one of which is folate. Folate helps to prevent pre-term delivery, low birth weight and neural tube defects. Folate is found abundantly in citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables and other fortified foods. Another essential nutrient in first trimester pregnancy is calcium for strong bones and teeth for both mother and baby. Dairy products are rich in calcium including breakfast cereals and several fruit juices. A healthy pregnancy diet really beneficial in each and every trimester so it must be follow strictly during pregnancy.

First Trimester Pregnancy Exercise

During the first trimester pregnancy including different stage of pregnancy, it is also important to have moderate exercise such as walking. Walking can also be beneficial at second trimester pregnancy. This should be done with doctor supervision to know the first trimester precaution. Exercise is good to prevent having an excess weight, eases any discomforts such as back pain, and lowers the risk of gestational diabetes as well as to increase stamina in preparation for pregnancy. Some people consider sex as a form of exercise and sex during first trimester pregnancy is allowed as long as the pregnancy is normal.
